Sampling History Museum

Before the birth of electronic music, sound had already been sampled.
Sampling has never been merely a technique—it’s a way of listening, of re-creating history. It reassembles sound fragments from tapes, vinyls, streets, and memories, bringing them back to life as the rhythm and language of our present.
It is not only a tool for making music, but a method of rethinking sound and reconstructing the world.
Sonic Archaeology × Contemporary Reproduction
The Museum of Sampled History, jointly organized by CtrlZ and Modular Commune, will be unveiled this November at Beijing’s 798·751 Gearing Space.
This is China’s first pop-up exhibition dedicated entirely to sampling machines. Through this event, we hope to revisit the evolution of sampling music and pay tribute to the instruments and artists that reshaped music history.
Exhibition
Following the timeline of sound, the exhibition traces the evolution from early analog samplers to modern digital systems, revealing how technology, culture, and creativity have transformed the art of sampling.
Exhibited Models:
- E-mu SP-1200
- Akai MPC 3000 · Akai MPC 2000XL · Akai MPC Live II · Akai MPC One
- Roland MV-8000 · Roland SP-202 · Roland SP-303 · Roland SP-404 · Roland TR-1000
Visitors can get close to these legendary machines—from the gritty 12-bit texture of early samplers to the crystal clarity of modern digital sound—and experience how time itself leaves traces in tone.

CtrlZ × Modular Commune
Rediscover the history of sound through the rhythm of sampling.
